What is Laser Hair Removal?

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that permanently eliminates hair by sending pulses of concentrated light into hair follicles. The light energy damages the follicles and prevents growth.

Dolly Singh, RN, and the team at NewSkin Laser Center use a specially engineered laser that rotates rapidly in small circles to treat targeted areas, such as the:

-Upper lip
-Legs
-Bikini line
-Back
-Face
-Arms.
The innovative laser reaches the darkened areas where follicles reside without causing any damage to the more delicate upper layers of skin or tissue.

How does laser hair removal treatment work?

Through a series of visits to one of the clean and comfortable NewSkin Laser Centers in Northridge or Simi Valley, California, you meet with your laser-trained nurse for four to six sessions, for about an hour each.

To prepare for the laser treatment, your nurse cleans and shaves the area and gives you protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the concentrated light.

NewSkin Laser Center uses the Palomar 1540 non-ablative Fraxel laser because it’s safe, fast, and effective. As the high-tech laser moves over the designated area, it heats the skin to the follicle. It isn’t painful and is far less uncomfortable than waxing or tweezing individual hairs.

Apply sunscreen for several weeks to prevent sunburn or pigment changes in your skin.

Pulsed-light systems:

This work by emitting a pulse of intense lamp-light into the hair follicle. The heat loosens the hair and disables new hair growth. Hair re-growth depends on each how fast each person's hair grows. You may return for more treatments as early as six weeks the last treatment. The treatment is quick and easy! It is very safe, because the technician will adjust the treatment for every skin type.

Traditional waxing and threading treatments:

Which essentially rip the hair from the skin, can be quite painful. Most people, however, find Palomar Pulsed Light treatments to be significantly more comfortable. In addition, since the pulses of light penetrate the skin, you do not need to let your hair grow out before you are treated. Will pulsed light treatments, you can remain virtually hair free all the time.

Our Palomar Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Laser Hair Removal system:

Treats most skin and hair types quickly and without pain. Why go through the pain and bother of shaving, plucking, tweezing, waxing, stringing or electrolysis only to have the hair come back, sometimes thicker than before?

Laser hair removal is the only known method of eliminating hair once and for all. Long term studies in the US and Europe have shown the technology to be effective and safe when used by experienced professionals (i.e. laser trained nurse or MD). Within 3 to 5 brief, painless treatments, most of the hair in the treated area disappears. Occasionally clients need a touch up session about 6 months after the end of their series to get rid of a few stray hairs. Good laser hair removal centers are clean and pleasant, their staff is accessible, knowledgeable and well trained, there is a physician with cosmetic training available on site for consultation and their equipment is up to date.

All laser hair removal systems function on the same principle. Intense light of a specific wavelength or set of wavelengths is sent through the top layers of the skin. This light is designed to selectively concentrate and heat dark tissue without damaging the lighter surrounding tissue. The energy destroys dark hair follicles without damaging the relatively lighter skin cells. This is why laser hair removal is most effective for people with light skin and dark hair.

Darker skin types or tanned skin take longer to treat because the contrast between skin and hair is less. As the light passes through the darker skin, relatively more of the energy gets absorbed by the tissue around the hair shaft. High energy settings would, therefore, cause damage to skin. We use less energy during each session to avoid burning the patient's skin. This is why darker skin takes a few more sessions to treat than lighter skin. This is also why we encourage our clients to stay away from the sun a few weeks before as well as during the course of their laser hair removal series.

Light hair is more problematic. Many centers will claim that they can treat light hair. Results are difficult to predict. There is no technology available that will effectively treat blonde hair, but reddish or light brown hair can be treated (more sessions are necessary). IPL tends to work better than diode or other lasers on lighter hair because it emits a broader variety of wavelegths of light.NewSkin Laser Center uses the Palomar system because it is fast, hurt less and it is the least prone to burning people. We have not been disappointed. Our results have been outstanding, even for patients with dark skin or light hair.
