Botox Q & A

What is Botox®?

Botox is a substance made from bacteria that was originally used for medical purposes until the FDA approved it for cosmetic use in 2002.

The special formulation interrupts communication between your brain and your facial muscles and impedes contraction. The result is relaxed facial muscles and diminished lines and wrinkles.

Because it’s minimally invasive, provides reliable results, is affordable, and is administered quickly, Botox is one of the most popular anti-aging treatments on the market. For patients who don’t need a full facelift, Botox offers similar lifting benefits without the inconvenience of surgery.

What conditions does Botox help?

As your skin ages, its loss of moisture and collagen causes it to lose some of its crucial elasticity.

The skin around areas where you have repetitive muscle contractions doesn’t bounce back as easily as it once did, so small creases and folds etch around your mouth, eyes, and forehead.

Botox treats wrinkles that form from years of repetitive facial contractions, often called dynamic wrinkles, including:

  • Frown lines
  • Forehead furrows
  • Smoker’s lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Smile lines

In addition to wrinkle minimization, Botox has a number of other important applications and is used by medical professionals for a number of conditions, such as:

  • Bladder control
  • Chronic migraines
  • Profuse sweating
  • Bowel disorders
  • Muscle spasms
  • Lazy eye
  • Crossed eyes
  • Torticollis
  • Cervical dystonia

What can I expect during the procedure?

Botox comes in powder form and is mixed with saline and placed in small vials. Dr. Darush applies a numbing solution and makes small strategic injections in the places on your face where you want the wrinkles to relax.

Because the needle Dr. Darush uses to administer the Botox is ultra-fine, the sensation you feel is only mildly uncomfortable, like a pinch.

How long will my results last?

The entire Botox procedure only takes about 10-15 minutes, and the positive effects are evident within an hour or two. Full results are visible in nearly a week and last up to half a year.
